January 1998--More than 600 amateur competitors of the world's bestselling Magic: The Gathering trading card game put on an intense show Dec. 12-13 as they competed in the Grand Prix (Manila) tournament, held in the capital of the Philippines. The fifth large-scale Qualifier tournament in the 199899 Magic professional season, Grand Prix (Manila) awarded Magic enthusiasts more than $10,000 in prize money and eight coveted invitations to compete in Pro Tour (Los Angeles), the next stop on the international Magic Pro Tour circuit.
Grand Prix (Manila) was organized by Novelty Entertainment, Inc., and featured two separate prize payouts. The Top 8 finishers in the tournament secured invitations and $3,000 worth of travel vouchers to Pro Tour - Los Angeles, in addition to part of the $10,000 cash purse shared among the top 32 players. The top 10 finishers in the 1700 division (DCI members who have a lifetime highest Limited rating of no greater than 1700, and who do not place in the top 32) shared $1,000 in cash and other prizes. In addition, Magic artist Ron Spencer met with tournament participants during the weekend and autographed cards.
