June 30, 1998 (Renton, Wash.)--Wizards of the Coast Inc., maker of the world's top-selling Magic: The Gathering trading card game, announced the results of the 1998 Magic: The Gathering Canadian National Championships, which took place the last weekend of June in Toronto, Canada.
Taking home the title of Canadian National Champion along with $2,500 cash and a secured spot on the four-member Canadian national team was Westminster, British Columbia native Peter Radonjic. The Canadian national team will compete in the 1998 Magic: The Gathering World Championships in August. Radonjic, who last appeared as a semifinalist at the Canadian Nationals in 1996 and was on the Canadian national team, masterfully outplayed Nick Chen of West Hill, Ontario to win the intense final match.
Joining Radonjic and Chen to complete the 1998 Canadian national team are third- and fourth-place finishers S. Ryan Kirk, from Regina, Saskatchewan, and Terry Tsang of Burnaby, British Columbia. These Top 4 players will travel to Seattle to compete against players from around the world for the title of Magic World Champion.
The Magic: The Gathering World Championships, now in its fifth year, will take place August 12-16, 1998, at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. The tournament will feature world-class Magic competitors representing more than 42 countries, all of whom will vie for $250,000 in cash prizes. Top finishers from national competitions around the world and finalists from the recent professional tournaments in Chicago, Germany, Los Angeles and New York will compete in the World Championships, which is the sixth and final event of the 1997-98 Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour season.
