Top Magic players from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand will convene at the Tokyo Big Sight, Japan's 280,000-square-foot international convention center, to compete for prizes including $75,000 (USD) in cash, plus 2,000,000 (Yen) in scholarships and endorsement contracts. Event sponsors have also donated a brand-new automobile and other exciting products for use as prizes. In addition to the APAC Championship, Tokyo's Big Sight will host the 1998 Japan Open and the 1998 Japan Junior Open. All three events are collectively called the Tournament of Champions.

This triple-header Magic event is also partnering with the Japan Fantasy Convention (JAFCON) in the same venue. Projected total attendance for the combined Tournament of Champions and JAFCON is approximately 20,000 people, the largest number of attendees any Magic tournament has hosted to date.
