Unglued, a wacky new supplement for Magic: The Gathering, takes the game into a whole new realm -- a ridiculous one.
Magic spoofs itself with this non-tournament-legal collection of 94 new cards, identified by their silver border and broken egg icon (in black for common, silver for uncommon, and gold for rare cards). Poultry, mad cows, and random effects are characteristic of this set of cards, which includes such instant classics as "Infernal Spawn of Evil" (black), "Sex Appeal" (white), "Goblin Bowling Team" (red), "Gus" (green), and "Clam-I-Am" (blue).
While most of the cards are certainly suitable for play between two players, overall they encourage group play, teams, and comic interaction. For example, it is far more amusing to invoke the special ability of the "Knight of the Hokey Pokey" (yes, you have to do a little dance) in front of an audience of many, rather than a few. Other cards, like "Sex Appeal," function better the more people that are present (in this case, the more people of the opposite sex). Other cards require players to balance them on their heads, hands, etc., to either retain an effect or prevent one.
Some of these cards really are funnier than hell, but might not be suitable for play against opponents lacking a sense of humor (comments about Unglued from some of my more humorless opponents will be posted as they are uttered ... ).
Unglued's 94 new cards are playable with standard Magic cards, and inlude five specially designed basic lands, six different token cards, and even some cards with art that is horizontal, rather than vertical. Unglued cards are available in 10-card booster packs, which include one land in each and have a suggested retail price of $1.99.
