TIPS for Starship Troopers
- When the scenario calls for a certain number of humans or bugs to exit the board, don't exit them in shifts. Hold off until all that have to can leave at one time, so that as much firepower as possible can be used until it is possible to exit everyone at once.
- Protect your nuke. Make sure there are always troopers defending his front and flanks. This is less important in the case of Plasma Bugs, which are innately much tougher.
- Don't worry too much about conserving nuke ammo. True, you only have six shots and need the nuke to win some scenarios. However, an aggressive bug player is probably going to wipe out your nuke by the time you bring it in range to use it against what you really want to, and you may be that much better off if you've evened up the odds by using it a few times before this.
- When faced with a nuke (bugs) or plasma bugs (human), keep an interval of at least one hex in between soldiers.
- If firing a nuke or plasma bug at long range (i.e, 8 or more hexes), consider firing at a hex surrounded by several you would like to hit, rather than at a single one you would prefer to hit. At such ranges, the odds are you will miss, but the round will still hit one of the adjacent hexes, as determined by the scatter diagram.
- When playing the humans, don't move if you don't have to. This will increase your rate of fire.
- When the scenario calls for placement of terrain features, use a bit of wax or glue tack to help keep them from shifting about on the map board.
- After playing through all 12 battles, you can begin playing the scenarios again from Battle 1, incorporating the rules that were incorporated throughout the game (e.g., grenades, re-opening of bug holes, etc.).
