    Roborally
Wizards of the Coast; 1998; $19.95

Radioactive is the fourth in a series of expansion sets for the RoboRally game system that includes three exciting new boards and several new game elements.

For those of you who have not been exposed to Wizards of the Coast's RoboRally yet, it is a board game (not a collectible card game) in which players assume the roles of bored factory computers. Each night, each computer uses the now idle assembly lines to challenge each other to races. Players receive a number of cards which they can then use to program their (not-too-bright) robots as they race from checkpoint to checkpoint (hopefully without being destroyed by the various floor elements, which include wall mounted lasers, pits, etc.)

The three new Radioactive boards incorporate three new board elements, along with a number of other elements from prior expansion sets.

    The new board elements are:
Radiation does 1 point of damage for each phase you end there.

Radioactive Waste does a point of damage as well, but you may also “activate a dormant option” by drawing an option card.

One Way Walls act like walls from one direction, and are invisible from the other.

    The new boards are:
Reactor Core: If you like option monsters, you will love Reactor Core. Tons of Radioactive Waste will quickly give you more options than you know what to do with, and as you acquire new ones, you can discard less valuable ones to keep the damage to a minimum. This is a tough transition board, as there are few conveyor belts, etc. to assist you moving around. The GM who sets a flag here is asking for an interesting match.
Pinwheel: A couple of Radioactive Waste zones (surrounded by Radiation, of course) mixed with a number of fast conveyor belts make for a good transition board.
Shake ‘N’ Bake: Lots of conveyor belts combined with one-way walls result in you being nudged toward a central “oven” of Flamers. And a quick exit is hard to achieve. The sadistic GM will position a flag there, of course ...

Overall, RoboRally: Radioactive is a worthwhile addition to the arsenals of RoboRally fans. The boards are interesting, and the new elements quite in line with the new theme. I don’t know what else WotC Has in mind for RoboRally, but I eagerly await them.
