January, 1999--Wizards of the Coast and the Magic: The Gathering brand team, following extensive review and consideration, have decided to introduce premium cards in the Urza's Legacy expansion.
Featured with the Feb. 15 release of Urza's Legacy, an identical premium version of every card in that set will be included. Premium cards are aesthetically unique, featuring a foil- enhanced laminate appearance and texture (similar to the special Magic card "Lightning Dragon" from the Urza's Saga prerelease tournaments. The premium cards will have the same play values as the regular cards and will not detract from or alter game play in any way.
"Wizards of the coast has experienced an overwhelming consumer demand to emphasize the collectibility of the Magic game," says Kristine Szarkowitz of Wizards of the Coast. "We believe this addition to Magic card sets will satisfy the needs of social and competitive players, as well as collectors."
Premium cards are not available in preconstructed
decks or tournament packs, only in booster packs. On average, one in every
six booster packs will contain a premium card. Furthermore, there will be
significantly fewer full sets of premium cards than there were of rare cards
in the Beta version of Magic.
