Hannibal: Rome Versus Carthage is a simple, elegant board game that allows two players to control the generals of Rome and Carthage during the 2nd Punic War.
Traditional counters on an impressive, full-color board represent the armies of Rome and her African nemesis, while stand-up counters represent the various generals. Game action is driven by event cards, that players can utilize to do things such as move armies, obtain guides for mountain crossings, call up allies, gain political control over territories, or inflict hardships (such as revolts or epidemics) upon the enemy. Turn tracks and all vital charts needed to play the game are printed directly on the game board, reducing the amount of time needed to flip through the rules book.
Hannibal is certainly one of the best board games released in recent years in a number of respects. Foremost among its qualities is that the rules are very straightforward and simple, but still feel realistic, allowing players to concentrate on strategy rather than dwelling on game mechanics.
Game play is swift, allowing a game to be easily played in just a few hours, or even less if a "sudden-death" event occurs (i.e., the fall of Rome or Carthage or the death of Hannibal).
Few games deserve a perfect score, but this is one of them. For players who enjoy ancient world strategy and warfare, Hannibal scores a full 6 (and rare) points of a 6-point scale.
