Gorgeous literature! Cold Mountain is achingly beautiful! Frazier's choices of words and descriptions make this a book to be read slowly, savoring every particle. This is not a book to be raced through; it one to be absorbed. Even as slowly as I went, Cold Mountain ended all too soon. Based on local history and family stories passed down by the author's great- great- grandfather, Cold Mountain is the tale of a wounded soldier, Inman, who walks away from the ravages of the war and back home to his prewar sweetheart, Ada. Inman's odyssey through the devastated landscape of the soon-to-be-defeated South interweaves with Ada's struggle to revive her father's farm. As their long-separated lives begin to converge at the close of the war, Inman and Ada confront the vastly transformed world they've been delivered.

Glory at a Gallop:  Tales of the Confederate Cavalry (Brassey’s, 1995, by William R. Brooksher & David K. Snider, ISBN 1-57488-002-0, $16.95) is a compilation of previously-published articles by two former U.S. Air Force officers. A chronologically arranged series of 16 articles that jump from subject to subject and theater to theater, the overall theme of the book is the idea that the Confederate cavalry was the best in the world at that time. The authors zero in on one fundamental reason for this — the individual Southern cavalry soldier. These men were born to the horse and gun, had grown up riding and shooting, and "war meant only a change in locale and game. Only $14.36 from the Living History Bookstore. Of all the scoundrels who have strutted their way through American history, few have been so perversely fascinating as Benjamin F. Butler, the "Beast" of New Orleans. For nine months in 1862, Butler served as head of Union troops occupying that city, and he managed to win the adoration of its poor, cleaned the streets, flushed the sewers, and stabilized the currency; he also insulted fair southern womanhood, traded with the enemy, and stole everything he could lay his hand on.
